An
Eerie Premonition
“...if anything
were to happen to my daughter while your
company is making it difficult
to
obtain timely and
appropriate treatment, it could be
a serious problem.”
This is an actual letter
that I wrote to the insurance company
almost one full year before
my daughter died.
All identifying
details have been replaced with multiple XXs.
June 7, 2002

Dear Insurance
Company:
This letter is to
formally notify you of my extreme displeasure
with your services.
My 15-year old daughter has
been having
difficulties related to a negative outlook on life, negative body
image and,
I suspect, depression. Additionally, she has been
involved in substance abuse.
She
went through a drug rehab
program at XXXXX because she had been smoking weed,
which
escalated to snorting Coke. She was discharged from
the XXXX program with the
recommendation that she seek
counseling.
It took a week to get
the provider list in the mail. After the
frustration of calling several providers only to be
told that they
had no counselors available at this time, or that there was a one
month waiting
list, I finally succeeded in connecting with Ms. M,
who was not only female and
experienced in counseling women
with body image issues as well as substance abuse, but
who could
also see my daughter immediately.
I called your company on
June 5, 2002, to make sure I could see
her, because her office was
listed on our
provider list, but she was
not. Unfortunately, I did not get the name of the person I
spoke to,
but I was told that that would be no problem. I asked if that meant
that I now
had authorization to proceed. I was told that I first had
to make an appointment and
then
call back for authorization.
Within 5 minutes, I called back with an appointment for
June 10,
but was now told that I could not see Ms. M. because her name was
not on the
list. I asked her how that could be when I had just posed
that very question five
minutes earlier and was told it was okay.
